COCHRAN — City of Cochran utility customers may notice changes in their water bills beginning this month as city officials work to correct a billing issue involving replacement water meters.
In a public statement, the city explained that approximately 18 months ago, it began replacing water meters that were nearing the end of their expected service life. During that process, the city received different types of meters that were incorrectly factored into the calculations used by its utility billing system.
According to the statement, city officials were unaware at the time that the replacement meters were not being calculated correctly.
The problem has prompted an extensive review of customer accounts as the city works to establish a uniform billing process that accurately reflects water usage.
“Our Billing Clerk has worked extremely hard and put in many long hours reviewing accounts, researching the issue, and working to determine exactly what has occurred,” the city stated.
Officials cautioned that correcting the problem will take time and that some customers may notice changes in their bills this month and potentially over the next several months.
The city did not specify how many customers have been affected, the potential amounts of billing adjustments or whether individual customers may have been previously overcharged or undercharged.
Recognizing that unexpected increases could create financial difficulties, the city said it will work with affected customers by offering payment extensions or payment arrangements when appropriate.
“Our goal is to be as transparent and honest with our customers as possible while we work through this transition,” the statement said.
The announcement comes as Cochran continues addressing utility billing problems that have already resulted in an extension of the October payment deadline.
Customers with questions about their bills or unexpected changes are encouraged to contact Cochran City Hall at 478-934-6346.
City officials thanked customers for their patience and cooperation as work continues to correct the billing system.
