A day of fellowship, music, food, history and community celebration is planned later this month as local churches join together to host the Cochran-Bleckley Juneteenth Celebration Fest.
The event will take place Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 102 N. Second Street in Cochran, located behind the police department, courthouse and voter registration office.
Hosted by the Cochran-Bleckley County Host Churches, the celebration will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including music, games, arts and crafts, vendors, food and contests.
Organizers say the event is designed to bring the community together while honoring the significance of Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, perseverance and hope.
Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. The day has grown into a nationwide celebration of freedom, heritage and community.
Following the daytime festival, the celebration will continue with a Gospel Concert at 4 p.m. at the Cochran City Auditorium.
Organizers hope the event will provide an opportunity for residents of all backgrounds to gather, learn, celebrate and strengthen community connections.
The theme reflected throughout the event is simple but powerful: Unity, Peace and Freedom.
