There is just something about fall in a small town.
Maybe it’s the first cool breeze after a long Georgia summer. Maybe it’s the smell of food trucks lining downtown streets. Maybe it’s seeing families gathered together, children laughing, and neighbors catching up with people they haven’t seen in months.
Whatever it is, that feeling is coming back to Cochran.
The Great Pumpkin Festival will return on Saturday, Oct. 17, bringing with it a full day of family fun, community spirit, live entertainment, vendors, food trucks, a classic car show, activities for children and, of course, pumpkins.
And this year, organizers are encouraging everyone to get involved long before October arrives.
The festival’s Pumpkin Growing Contest is officially underway, giving residents all summer to grow their biggest, heaviest, most beautiful or most unique pumpkin. The contest is open to all ages, meaning children, parents, grandparents and even entire families can take part.
Imagine spending the summer tending a pumpkin patch in the backyard, checking on your growing giant each morning and wondering if it might be the one that takes home a ribbon this fall.
The festival’s classic car show is also expected to be a major attraction, with classes for stock vehicles, modified cars, specialty vehicles and more.
Car enthusiasts from around the region will have the opportunity to show off their pride and joy while visitors stroll through rows of classic chrome and vintage beauty.
But perhaps the biggest attraction isn’t a pumpkin or a classic car.
It’s the opportunity to gather as a community.
In a world that often seems rushed and divided, events like the Great Pumpkin Festival give people a reason to slow down, spend time together and make memories.
Children who attend this year may someday be bringing their own children to the festival. Friends will reconnect. Families will laugh together. And for one day, downtown Cochran will become the place where fall officially begins.
So mark your calendars for Oct. 17.
Better yet, plant a pumpkin.
Fall will be here before we know it.
