Scott Williams spends most of his days balancing hard work, stress and the outdoors.
The 45-year-old Bleckley County native, a member of the BCHS Class of 1999, works in the timber industry buying and selling land while also farming property in Bleckley and Dodge counties.
After graduating from ABAC with a degree in agriculture, Williams thought he would return home and farm with his father.
“I thought I’d come home and farm with my dad,” Williams said. “Dad said no.”
Instead, Williams started talking with people in the timber industry, making connections and learning the business. Before long, he realized he wanted to build something for himself.
Williams describes himself as “hard headed” and “not a quitter.”
He is also extremely competitive.
“Hates to lose,” he said with a laugh. “Those are my words, not yours.”
That competitive nature showed up for years in hunting competitions with his father. The pair competed nationally and won several times together.
Williams still loves hunting and fishing and especially enjoys helping others experience hunting adventures. But over time, his focus in the outdoors has shifted.
“I love deer and turkey hunting,” he said. “I have hunted and shot a lot of deer and turkeys … enough to satisfy me. I am blessed.”
These days, one of his favorite ways to deal with the stress of farming and the timber business is through photography.
“Farming, the timber business … all of it is stressful,” Williams said.
Photography became what he calls a therapeutic hobby. Though he says he is still learning, Williams has already taken more than 1,000 photographs.
“I love it and being outdoors is great,” he said.
For Williams, photography is about more than simply snapping pictures.
“Photography is more than just pointing and shooting,” he said.
He especially enjoys quietly walking through the woods, calling up deer and turkeys and capturing moments many people never get to see up close.
For someone who once measured success through competition and trophies, Williams now seems just as content chasing the perfect photograph in the middle of the woods.
