The Duchess has a snack drawer.
Crackers, cookies… enough to last about 96 days. I may have gone a little overboard, but I’ve told a few of her favorites we’re willing to share.
Today, though, I realized just how serious snacks are.
She watched someone buy Oreos out of the vending machine and turned to me and said, “I’d like some of that.”
I didn’t have any change, so I told her I’d go to Walmart. Truth is, she’s always liked Oreos more than Cheez-Its anyway.
So off I went. It is always an adventure when I go there. You too?
I came back with a box of individually wrapped Oreos—two to a pack, just right for her drawer.
But while I was in the store, I spotted something new. I had to squint and stand on my tiptoes to see it.
Zero sugar Oreos.
Now why do they keep messing with Oreos?
I’ve tried Double Stuf, wasn’t sold on Cakesters, and don’t even get me started on some of the other flavors. There’s just nothing like an original Oreo.
Momma loves them. And I swear, there’s something about that cookie that settles her. She nibbles it so daintily, and for a few minutes, everything feels calm.
I couldn’t imagine handing her a “zero sugar” version of her beloved Oreo.
But then I thought about my own journey—trying to eat better, missing the little things.
Maybe… just maybe… these would be okay.
So I took both to her figuring one would go home with me.
I filled her drawer with the originals, then handed her one pack of the zero sugar kind and explained the difference.
She took a nibble.
Then another.
Then a bite.
“These are good,” she said.
“Can you tell a difference?” I asked.
“A little.”
And just like that, she finished one and moved on to the second.
Of course, I had to try one too. Carefully. Skeptically.
Nibble.
Nibble.
Okay… bite.
Y’all—Momma was right.
There’s a slight difference, sure. But somehow, the integrity of the Oreo holds up.
Which makes me wonder…
Maybe some things can change a little and still be just fine.
Either way—thank you, Oreos.
And as for Momma…
She doesn’t need any more snacks for a while.
Unless, of course, I have to make another Oreo run.
