From Staff Reports

As part of Georgia Cities Week 2026 last week, the City of Cochran spotlighted the essential work of its Public Works Department, including the Water and Sewer Division, which plays a critical role in serving residents and businesses across the community.

According to information released by the city, Cochran’s water system is supplied by four խոր deep wells strategically located throughout the city. Each year, more than 280 million gallons of water are distributed through over 40 miles of water lines to homes and businesses.

Public Works employees are responsible for maintaining this system by routinely reading, inspecting, and repairing water meters, fixing water lines, and testing water supplies to ensure residents receive clean, safe, and reliable water.

The city’s sewer system is equally vital, consisting of approximately 32 miles of sanitary sewer lines and six lift stations that transport wastewater to the city’s treatment facility.

Cochran’s wastewater treatment plant processes an average of 530,000 gallons of wastewater daily. The facility uses a modern, state-of-the-art system that includes biological cleaning, solids removal, and ultraviolet disinfection to treat wastewater before it is safely returned to the environment.

City officials noted that Public Works provides utility services to more than 4,850 residents and over 100 businesses. In addition to water and sewer services, the department also encompasses street maintenance, solid waste, gas services, and wastewater treatment operations.

The department currently employs seven full-time workers who help maintain the city’s infrastructure and ensure services are delivered efficiently.

Looking ahead, the city has received funding through the Ossoff Appropriation to upgrade the main lift station. Planned improvements include enhancements to pumps and control systems, which are expected to strengthen the reliability of the sewer system.

City leaders say the recognition during Georgia Cities Week is an opportunity to highlight the behind-the-scenes work that keeps Cochran running smoothly each day.
