In addition to a lengthy discussion on a state bill affecting the Cochran-Bleckley County Airport Authority, the Cochran City Council addressed several other agenda items during its meeting, including appointments, proclamations and routine business matters.

Council members approved the appointment of voting delegates to the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia ahead of its annual meeting scheduled for May in St. Simons. Mayor Carla Coley expressed that the position should be held by someone familiar with gas authority matters and suggested Deputy City Clerk Tiffany Fowler, noting her experience attending meetings.

After discussion, Mayor Pro Tem Shane Savant agreed to step aside, and the council approved Gary Ates to serve, with Fowler also taking on a role in the delegation.

In a separate personnel matter, Fowler was also selected to serve in an interim role as city clerk. Fowler has been employed with the City of Cochran since August 2022 and has gained experience in various aspects of municipal government during her tenure.

After council voted Fowler as interim, Carla Coley, mayor, jokingly said, “Rather you want it or not, it’s yours.”

Council also approved adding Council member Dianne Lawson Lester as an additional signer on the city’s bank account. Coley noted Lester’s availability as a reason for the recommendation.

Several proclamations were also made during the meeting. The council recognized next week as Georgia Cities Week in Cochran, as previously highlighted by The Ledger. Stepping Stones was recognized in connection with Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and April 17 was officially proclaimed as Chris Harris Day.

Additional routine items, including project considerations and requests, were also discussed and approved.
