From Staff Reports
COCHRAN, Ga. — Residents of Cochran and Bleckley County are encouraged to prepare for potentially hazardous weather this weekend as Hurricane Isaias approaches the northern Gulf Coast, bringing the possibility of strong winds, heavy rainfall, power outages and tornadoes to portions of Georgia.
According to an update shared by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA), the primary period of concern across much of the state will be Friday night, October 9, through early Sunday morning, October 11.
Although the storm’s center is forecast to move through Alabama, much of Georgia could experience hazardous conditions on the eastern side of the system.
Tornado Threat
One of the most significant concerns is the possibility of tornadoes overnight Friday and throughout Saturday.
GEMA reports that the Storm Prediction Center has placed southwest and west-central Georgia under a Slight Risk for severe weather Saturday.
Residents should understand that tornadoes can develop quickly, including during overnight hours when people may be sleeping.
Households are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including alerts capable of waking them during the night.
Strong Winds and Power Outages
According to GEMA, sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph, are expected across designated watch and warning areas Friday night through Saturday night.
Higher gusts are possible in some locations.
Strong winds could bring down trees and power lines, potentially causing extended power outages and hazardous travel conditions.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture, decorations and other loose objects before conditions deteriorate.
Heavy Rain and Flooding
Heavy rainfall is also expected across much of Georgia, particularly Friday night and Saturday morning.
While widespread flooding is not anticipated, locations experiencing heavy rainfall could see isolated flash flooding Saturday.
Motorists are reminded never to drive through flooded roadways.
Local Forecast
The latest forecast for Cochran calls for increasing rain chances Friday afternoon, followed by periods of rain and windy conditions Saturday.
Saturday’s high temperature is expected to be near 75 degrees, with rain chances approaching 98 percent.
Showers and thunderstorms may continue into Sunday morning before conditions begin improving later in the day.
Prepare Now
Residents are encouraged to charge cellphones, keep flashlights available, check emergency supplies and identify a safe location inside their homes.
If a tornado warning is issued, move immediately to a small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
The Ledger encourages residents to follow official updates from the National Weather Service, GEMA and local emergency management officials.
Weather conditions and forecasts can change. Residents should remain alert, prepared and informed throughout the weekend.
