COCHRAN — Problems with the City of Cochran’s utility billing process are continuing, with city officials now acknowledging that October bills will be mailed later than normal.
In an announcement Tuesday, the city said “billing updates” have delayed the utility billing process and residents will receive their bills later than usual.
Because customers will have less time between receiving their bills and the normal payment deadline, the city has extended the October due date from Oct. 10 to Oct. 15.
The city characterized the change as an effort to give customers additional time to receive their bills and make payments without being penalized.
But the latest announcement comes amid continuing concerns about the city’s utility billing operations.
For residents, the issue is more than an inconvenience. Utility bills are a basic function of city government, and delays can affect household budgets — particularly when customers do not know exactly when a bill will arrive or how much time they will have to pay it.
The city did not explain in its public announcement exactly what the “billing updates” involve, what caused the latest delay or when officials expect the billing process to return to its normal schedule.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding while we work through these billing updates,” the city stated.
Customers now have until Oct. 15 to make their October utility payments.
For a city already dealing with questions surrounding its administrative operations, another disruption in something as routine and essential as utility billing raises a straightforward question: When will Cochran’s utility customers once again be able to count on receiving accurate, timely bills on a predictable schedule?
