COCHRAN — Middle Georgia State University’s Theatre at MGA will open its Fall 2026 season with The Belle of Amherst, a one-woman play celebrating the life and writings of renowned American poet Emily Dickinson.
The production, written by William Luce, stars Dr. Mary Christian in the role of Dickinson and is directed by Dr. John Iverson.
Performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19, and Friday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Russell Hall Auditorium on the Cochran campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
Rather than presenting a traditional biography, The Belle of Amherst offers audiences an intimate portrait of Dickinson through her poetry, letters and personal reflections. The play explores the life of one of America’s most influential literary voices, whose work has inspired readers for generations.
Known for her reclusive lifestyle and distinctive style of poetry, Dickinson penned nearly 1,800 poems during her lifetime, though only a small number were published before her death. Luce’s acclaimed script brings her words and personality to life in a performance that has become a favorite among theater audiences nationwide.
The production marks the first play of MGA Theatre’s Fall 2026 season and offers local residents an opportunity to enjoy live theater while experiencing the story of one of America’s greatest poets.
