As the day draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on what freedom truly means.
Today, we celebrated with parades, fireworks, laughter, family gatherings and time spent with friends. Those traditions are part of what makes the Fourth of July special, but they also remind us that the freedoms we enjoy every day didn’t come without sacrifice.
Freedom is the ability to worship according to our faith, speak our minds, pursue our dreams, serve our communities and care for the people we love. It allows us to disagree respectfully, to vote, to volunteer, to start a business, to tell stories and to build stronger communities together.
As a journalist, I’m especially grateful for the freedom to ask questions, seek the truth and share the stories of the people who make Bleckley County such a special place. It’s a responsibility I never want to take for granted.
Tonight, as the last fireworks fade from the sky, my heart is simply filled with gratitude—for those who fought to secure these freedoms, for those who continue to protect them, and for the blessings of living in a country where we can celebrate them openly.
I hope you and your family had a safe, joyful and meaningful Independence Day. Happy Fourth of July, and may we never forget the value of the freedom we’ve been given.
