When people hear the term “Chamber of Commerce,” they often assume the organization is responsible for everything from recruiting businesses and planning events to overseeing economic development.

While the Cochran-Bleckley Chamber of Commerce plays an important role in the community, its mission is often misunderstood.

At its core, according to Melissa Barker, President and CEO of the Cochran-Bleckley Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber exists to champion the local business community, providing opportunities for networking, promotion, education and advocacy while working to strengthen Cochran and Bleckley County.

Unlike city or county government, Barker explained, the Chamber does not create ordinances, determine what or how many of one type of business is in the community, set public policy or provide municipal services. Instead, it serves as a membership-based organization focused on supporting local businesses and fostering connections throughout the community.

One of the Chamber’s primary goals is to help residents and business owners connect with local resources.

“We want to give people the opportunity to connect with one another instead of going out of town for services and goods,” Barker said.

Barker has served as president and CEO of the Chamber for the past two and a half years. During that time, membership has grown from 76 members to 276 members.

“Knowledge is power,” she said, noting that one of the Chamber’s roles is helping businesses and community members stay informed about opportunities, events and resources available in the area.

The Chamber currently operates with a staff of three and maintains office hours Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. until noon.

While many residents may be familiar with ribbon cuttings and public events, much of the Chamber’s work occurs behind the scenes through member services, business promotion, networking opportunities and community partnerships.

Barker said there is no shortage of activity taking place in Cochran and Bleckley County.

“There are lots of events going on in Cochran,” she said, encouraging residents to visit the Chamber’s website and sign up for its newsletter to stay informed about local happenings.

Looking toward the future, Barker believes collaboration will be key to continued growth.

“In order for Cochran to grow, we all have to work together and go in the same direction,” she said.

Barker said her passion for the community is rooted in her family’s experience here.

“I love Cochran,” she said. “The small-town atmosphere and family here. I truly believed this was the best and safest place to raise my kids. They are both grown and are glad to have grown up in Cochran.”
