Every once in a while, a book comes along that is so unusual, so quietly charming and unexpectedly heartfelt that it completely takes over your attention. Remarkably Bright Creatures was that kind of book for me.

Yes, it is a little weird. After all, one of the main characters is an octopus. But somehow this tender, quirky story works in all the best ways.

What surprised me most was not the novelty of the story, but the comfort of it. The book settled my mind in a way few things do lately. All the chaos, distractions and noise in my brain faded into the background, and for a while, all I focused on was the story itself. That is a gift not every book can give.

The novel balances humor, grief, loneliness and hope with remarkable gentleness. The characters are flawed, lovable and deeply human, while the octopus — oddly enough — may be one of the most emotionally perceptive characters in the entire book.

There is warmth tucked into these pages. The story reminds readers that connection can happen in unexpected places and that healing sometimes arrives quietly, one small interaction at a time.

More than anything, this book made me feel calmer while reading it. In a world full of scrolling, noise and endless distractions, Remarkably Bright Creatures felt like sitting quietly beside someone who understands loneliness but still believes in goodness.

And that alone made it memorable.

I passed this one along to my older sister and my momma too — partly because I enjoyed it, and partly because some stories deserve to keep traveling from one set of hands to another.
