From Staff Reports

The Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to stay alert as scammers continue targeting people through threatening phone calls and fake law enforcement claims.

According to the sheriff’s office, scammers often pretend to be deputies or court officials and may tell victims they missed jury duty, have a warrant for their arrest, or owe money that must be paid immediately to avoid jail time.

Officials say these callers frequently demand payment through gift cards, Cash App, Venmo, cryptocurrency, Apple Pay, or other instant payment methods.

The sheriff’s office stressed that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not call people demanding money over the phone and do not threaten arrest in exchange for immediate payment.

“If we have a warrant, we don’t call — we come,” the message from the sheriff’s office states.

Residents are encouraged to hang up immediately if they receive one of these calls, block the number, and never give out personal or financial information. Officials also advise people not to send money to unknown callers under any circumstance.

Authorities say scam attempts continue to evolve and often target elderly residents or people caught off guard by aggressive threats and scare tactics.

The sheriff’s office encourages citizens to stay alert, stay smart, and help spread awareness to friends and family members to prevent others from becoming victims.
