As massive wildfires continue to spread across South Georgia, local firefighters are stepping up to help.
Bleckley County Fire Chief and Emergency Management Agency Director Matt Kelley confirmed to The Ledger earlier today that a team from the Bleckley County Fire Department has been deployed to assist in battling the growing blazes.
Across the region, more than 27,000 acres have been consumed by wildfire, with evacuations underway in several communities. Thick smoke, dry conditions, and shifting winds are creating dangerous and unpredictable conditions for both residents and first responders.
Kelley said departments from across the state are sending crews as requested, working together in a coordinated effort to contain the fires and protect lives, homes, and working forests.
As the situation continues to evolve, officials are urging residents to remain alert, follow all safety guidance, and keep those affected in their thoughts and prayers.
Meanwhile, crews on the front lines continue working around the clock—facing heat, smoke, and exhaustion—with one shared mission: to bring these fires under control.
Our prayers are with all in South Georgia.
