From Staff Reports

As part of Georgia Cities Week 2026, the City of Cochran is highlighting the people and purpose behind one of its most essential services—the Cochran Police Department.

Editor’s Note: The Ledger has made multiple attempts to contact Cochran Police Chief Jeff Trawick to discuss the potential of some human interest stories on his department but has yet to receive a response. The following information is based on details released by the City of Cochran as part of Georgia Cities Week.

According to information shared by the city, the Cochran Police Department serves as a full-service agency dedicated to protecting life and property while working to reduce crime and strengthen community relationships.

The department is made up of 25 employees, including 14 full-time officers, two part-time officers, and administrative personnel who work together to support daily operations and public safety efforts across the city.

Beyond patrol duties, the department includes several divisions designed to meet a variety of community needs. The Investigations Division handles more complex cases, while the Animal Control Division addresses animal-related concerns within the city.

The Municipal Court Division plays a key role in processing citations, managing fines, and maintaining case documentation. Staff also assist the district attorney’s office with necessary paperwork tied to local cases.

Training is another important component of the department’s work. The Cochran Police Department maintains a Training Division responsible for ensuring officers meet state requirements, including firearms qualification and ongoing professional development.

City leaders noted that the department’s mission goes beyond enforcement, with a focus on education, prevention, and building trust within the community it serves.

Looking ahead, the department is exploring additional ways to connect with residents. Plans include the development of a Citizens Police Academy, as well as a potential internship program in partnership with Middle Georgia State University’s Criminal Justice Program.
