From Staff Reports

Firefighters from across Georgia gathered in Cochran this weekend for a hands-on training designed to prepare them for one of the more dangerous situations they may encounter in the field — fires involving pressurized propane containers.

Hosted by the Bleckley County Fire Department (BCFD), the live burn training took place Saturday evening at the Bleckley County High School gym parking lot. The exercise simulated a pressurized propane tank fire, giving firefighters the opportunity to practice real-world response techniques in a controlled environment.

More than 40 firefighters participated in the training, representing eight departments from across the state, including Bleckley County, Dodge, Laurens, Twiggs, Tattnall (Reidsville), 10 Mile Fire (Baxley), the City of Cochran, and the GDC Center in Chester.

During the exercise, crews worked together to assess and respond to an active propane tank fire — a scenario firefighters frequently face when residential or structure fires involve gas tanks. The training emphasized safety, coordination, and proper suppression techniques under high-risk conditions.

The public was invited to attend, offering the community a firsthand look at the intensity and importance of firefighter training.

BCFD officials noted that propane tanks are commonly found at homes and can pose serious hazards when exposed to fire, making this type of training essential for protecting both firefighters and the public.

The department also extended thanks to Ard Propane for supplying the propane used in the exercise.
