Growing up in Cochran, Georgia …
There’s something about growing up in a small town that stays with you.
In a small town, you are never just a name in a headline or a number in a system. You are someone’s daughter. Someone’s classmate. Someone’s teammate. Someone’s neighbor. You are the kid who rode your bike down the same streets your parents once did. You are the face people recognize in the grocery store and the voice they know when you say hello.
In a small town, we may not always agree. We may stand on opposite sides of an issue. We may debate at ballgames, in coffee shops, or across social media. But when it matters most — when there is loss, illness, celebration, or need — we show up. We take food. We say prayers. We sit in waiting rooms. We hug in church foyers.
We are connected in ways bigger than politics, louder than opinions, and stronger than differences.
This weekly column will be a place to reflect on the people, places, things, and ideas that shape our community — the stories behind the headlines and the heart behind the hometown.
Because here in Bleckley County, we are more than residents…
We are family.
