For once, Cochran seems a little quiet.
No major controversy dominating social media. No heated debates taking over comment sections. No new issue sending everyone running to their keyboards.
And perhaps that silence is worth talking about.
Lately, we’ve had plenty to say. From Walmart’s refrigeration problems and concerns about grocery store options to questions surrounding the city manager’s appointment and decisions at City Hall, Cochran’s citizens have not been shy about speaking their minds.
And rightfully so. Accountability matters, and citizens should never be afraid to ask questions. I’ve certainly done my share of that myself, and I don’t intend to stop.
But let me ask Cochran something.
When was the last time we made just as much noise about something good?
Tractor Supply is coming to Cochran, with construction underway. That’s progress, investment, and something worth celebrating. We cannot constantly ask why businesses aren’t coming to our community and then remain silent when one does.
And what about the people already here?
When was the last time we praised a local business, thanked a city employee, recognized a teacher, or complimented someone simply for doing something right?
We complain when businesses close, but do we celebrate the ones that stay? We demand better leadership, but do we acknowledge good decisions? We want Cochran to grow, but are we helping make it a community worth investing in?
Now, don’t misunderstand me. I’m not suggesting we ignore problems or stop holding people accountable.
Accountability and appreciation can exist in the same community.
We can question City Hall on Monday and thank a city employee on Tuesday. We can demand better grocery options while appreciating those who serve us today. We can disagree with our neighbors without forgetting they’re still our neighbors.
Cochran is full of hardworking people who volunteer, support local businesses, serve our community, and quietly make a difference without expecting recognition.
Maybe it’s time we gave them some.
So here’s my challenge to Cochran and Bleckley County: The next time you feel the urge to post something negative, find something positive worth sharing, too.
Recognize a business. Compliment an employee. Thank a public servant. Celebrate a neighbor.
Because a community cannot build its future on criticism alone. It also needs encouragement, appreciation, and pride.
And perhaps the next time Cochran makes some noise, it shouldn’t be because something went wrong.
Maybe, just maybe, it should be because somebody did something right.
