Middle Georgia State University students and volunteers participated in a series of service projects across the university’s campuses as part of “Knights Serve for 9/11 Day,” an initiative honoring the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
On the Cochran Campus, MGA volunteers provided waterless car washes for first responders Thursday morning in front of Gateway Hall. Volunteers also offered refreshments and thank-you cards as part of the first-responder appreciation effort.
A similar event was held Friday near the Volleyball Gym on the Macon Campus.
MGA volunteers also assembled care kits for people served by Daybreak, a Macon ministry that works with individuals experiencing homelessness. Care-kit assembly projects were held on the Warner Robins, Eastman and Dublin campuses during the week.
Knights Serve for 9/11 Day was supported by a national grant from the 9/11 Day nonprofit organization and AmeriCorps. The grant program supports K-12 schools, colleges and universities in organizing volunteer projects for the National Day of Service and Remembrance, an annual observance established to transform the memory of September 11 into a day of unity and service.
MGA incorporated the initiative into its annual Day of Service, which gives students across all five campuses opportunities to participate in coordinated volunteer efforts.
“Receiving this grant allows us to expand opportunities for our students to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve while honoring the spirit of service that emerged in the aftermath of September 11,” said Devereaux Lindsey, MGA’s assistant director for Student Engagement & Service. “By combining Knights Serve for 9/11 Day with our annual Day of Service, we hope to inspire even more students to give back and strengthen our connections with communities across the region.”
The National Day of Service and Remembrance encourages volunteerism as a lasting tribute to those affected by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Millions of Americans participate in service projects each year in observance of 9/11 Day.
