COCHRAN — Cochran Airport is slated to receive up to $600,000 in state funding toward the construction of new hangars, according to an announcement Wednesday from state Sen. Larry Walker III and state Rep. Danny Mathis.

The project is estimated to cost $800,000, with the City of Cochran providing a $200,000 local match.

According to the announcement, the Georgia Department of Transportation is preparing an airport contract with the City of Cochran for the project. The state funding will come through Georgia’s Airport Aid Program.

“Cochran Airport is an important asset for Bleckley County, and this investment is another example of our commitment to strengthening the infrastructure that keeps rural Georgia competitive,” Walker said.

Walker said the additional hangars will help position the airport for continued growth and provide infrastructure for the future.

Mathis also pointed to the partnership between state and local government in funding the project.

“The state’s $600,000 commitment, combined with the City of Cochran’s $200,000 local investment, will help expand the Cochran Airport and provide new hangar facilities to support our local economy and the aviation industry,” Mathis said.

According to the release, the state’s $600,000 share is available through the Capital Outlay-Airport Aid Program in the Intermodal Transfer Facility AFY 2025 Budget.

Construction inspection and testing for the project will be conducted by Holt Consulting Company LLC.

Walker, R-Perry, serves as president pro tempore of the Georgia Senate and represents Senate District 20, which includes Bleckley County.

Mathis, R-Cochran, represents House District 133, which includes Bleckley, Dodge, Twiggs and Wilkinson counties and a portion of Telfair County.
