COCHRAN, Ga. — A juvenile has been taken into custody following what the Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office described as a “serious and active threat” involving the local school system.
Sheriff Daniel Cape announced Thursday afternoon that his office, working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Macon Resident Agency, received information indicating that a juvenile had expressed intentions of carrying out a school shooting.
“Because of the seriousness and credibility of the information received, investigators immediately began working to identify and locate the individual responsible,” Cape said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators with the two agencies quickly identified and located the juvenile, who was then taken into custody.
“We believe the actions taken by law enforcement today prevented a potentially devastating act of violence against our children, educators, and community,” Cape said.
Earlier Thursday, Bleckley County Middle School notified parents that law enforcement had investigated threatening comments allegedly made by a student. The school said the individual involved had been identified and law enforcement had taken appropriate action.
“At no time were students or staff in danger,” BCMS officials said in that statement.
The Sheriff’s Office subsequently provided additional information about the nature of the threat and law enforcement response.
Cape said threats involving schools will be treated “seriously, immediately, and with every resource available to us.”
The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the FBI. Additional information will be released when authorities determine it can be provided without compromising the investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release the juvenile’s identity or additional details about the alleged threat.
