Reality vs. Perception

Elon Musk said in a recent interview that if he died knowing he had at least tried to make the world a better place, he would die satisfied. Then he added the line that stuck with me: even if many thought he had done more harm than good, it is not the perception he cares about. It is the reality.

That is profound, and we ought to pause over it.

I think we worry way too much about perception. We care what other people think. We care how we look in other people’s eyes — at work, at church, on Facebook, in city hall. We edit our lives for the audience. We spend energy managing the story when we ought to be living the truth.

Perception is a moving target. Reality is not.

When I look back on my own life — COVID, semi-retirement, appraisals, Sunday school, twenty-plus years as a commissioner — the moments that mattered were not the ones that looked good. They were the ones that were good. Quiet faithfulness. A hard decision nobody clapped for. Showing up when it would have been easier to hide.

The measure is not how we look in the crowd’s eyes. The measure is how we look in the Father’s eyes. Are we making a difference for His kingdom, or are we too busy building our own brand of “looking busy”?

Perception will argue with you. Reality will hold you. Choose the one that lasts.
