COCHRAN — A new all-girl Christian academy has begun its first school year in Cochran, combining academics with faith-based instruction, leadership development and practical life skills.
Beauty From Ashes Youth Leadership Academy, located at 123 N. Fifth St., opened Aug. 10 and currently serves students in fourth through seventh grades. The academy presently has two students enrolled.
Founder and Head of School Sonya Wright said the academy was created to provide girls with an environment where they can grow academically, spiritually and personally while developing confidence, resilience and leadership skills.
The program includes traditional academic instruction along with Christian education, mentoring and lessons designed to prepare students for life beyond the classroom. Materials from the academy also outline instruction in areas such as communication, financial stewardship and other practical skills.
Wright said she had originally envisioned establishing the school in Macon, but by February 2026, plans began coming together in Cochran. She and others involved with the academy met with local leadership and said they felt welcomed by the community.
Wright brings a background in education and Christian ministry to the academy. Her husband, Senior Pastor Lee Wright, is also involved and teaches financial stewardship.
For Wright, the vision for Beauty From Ashes is rooted deeply in faith and in the example set by the women in her family. She said both her mother and grandmother helped shape her understanding of perseverance and resilience.
Her grandmother taught herself to read and write, while Wright described her mother as someone who never quits.
That influence continues to shape the message Wright hopes to pass on to the girls she teaches.
Asked what advice she would give her younger self, Wright’s answer was simple: trust God.
Wright said she is grateful for the support Beauty From Ashes has received from the Cochran community as the academy begins its first year.
The school’s mission centers on helping girls grow in confidence, faith, character and purpose while preparing them to become strong leaders in their homes, churches and communities.
