COCHRAN — Those unable to attend Cochran City Council meetings in person now have another way to see what happened.
Council meetings, which have been voluntarily livestreamed on Facebook by a local citizen, are now also being posted and archived on the Cochran Bleckley FYI YouTube channel.
The recordings are not official City of Cochran videos. The livestreaming and posting are being done independently by the husband of Cochran Mayor Carla Coley, according to The Ledger’s understanding.
Coley announced the YouTube availability Friday on her mayor Facebook page.
“Cochran City Council Meetings are now posted and archived on the ‘Cochran Bleckley FYI’ YouTube channel,” Coley wrote.
She also acknowledged an issue familiar to those who attend council meetings in person — hearing everything that is said can sometimes be difficult.
“The sound quality is not exceptional, and the recording is the best that can be done with a cell phone,” Coley wrote. “Hopefully, the City will find a way to help improve sound quality in the near future.”
The Cochran City Auditorium sound system can make portions of meetings difficult to hear, and council members, the city manager and city attorney do not always use microphones when speaking. Those issues can also affect the audio captured during the citizen-recorded livestreams.
Despite the limitations, the recordings provide the public with another opportunity to follow council discussions and actions without attending meetings in person.
Coley encouraged residents with questions about something discussed or an action taken during a meeting to contact her.
As of Saturday, Aug. 15, the Cochran Bleckley FYI YouTube channel had seven subscribers.
