Some people long for the good old days, but as I look at this picture, I think I’ll just enjoy things the way they are today.
You see, I prefer my flush toilet to an outhouse, a washing machine to washing tubs, a dryer to a clothesline, and running water to a well.
I also prefer buying chickens and eggs at the store rather than raising them in the yard. I’m guessing the cast-iron kettle over the fire is the source of hot water.
My closest encounter with the good old days came during an ice storm when we were without power for six days.
That meant we had no lights, heat, refrigeration, stove, hot water, or transportation. When we think back to the way things were, we should have an appreciation for the modern conveniences we enjoy today.
The psalmist said “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth/lavishes us with benefits” (Psalm 68:19). Many of those benefits are so familiar that we seldom stop to think about them until they are taken away.
Thank You, God, for the little things we take for granted each day. Forgive us for overlooking Your daily blessings and failing to thank You for them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
