The communities of Hawkinsville, Cochran, Bleckley County, and the surrounding area lost a familiar and beloved face on June 3 with the passing of Dr. Patricia Cavin Coussens following an extended battle with ovarian cancer. She was 76.
The news came via her social media page from family.
For many local families, Dr. Coussens was more than a physician. She was the doctor who delivered their children, cared for them through difficult seasons, and walked alongside generations of women through every stage of life.
I was one of her patients several years ago.
There is one thing that always stood out to me about Dr. Coussens. Before she delivered two of my nieces, she would quietly slip into the hospital chapel to pray. Years later, when she performed a minor surgical procedure on me, she did the same thing.
That simple act has stayed with me all these years.
According to her obituary, Dr. Coussens often said she believed she was called to medicine and viewed her career as a ministry. Anyone who knew her or sat in an exam room with her understands exactly what that meant.
Born in Troutman, North Carolina, Dr. Coussens rose from humble beginnings to become an accomplished physician, educator, Army major, wife, mother, and grandmother. After earning degrees in biology, chemistry, and special education, she pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. She attended the Medical College of Georgia, served in the United States Army, completed her residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, and ultimately became an OB/GYN.
In 1988, she opened a private practice in Hawkinsville and spent the next 37 years serving middle Georgia.
During those years, she helped bring thousands of babies into the world and cared for tens of thousands of women. In fact, she often delivered the babies of women she had delivered years earlier.
That kind of legacy cannot be measured by titles or awards.
It is measured in nursery photos tucked into family albums, in grateful mothers, in healthy babies, and in the trust of a community.
Dr. Coussens was also a devoted wife, mother of five sons, and grandmother of six grandchildren. Yet despite her many accomplishments, she reportedly considered those roles among her greatest blessings.
The Ledger extends its condolences to the Coussens family and to the many patients whose lives were touched by her care, compassion, and faith.
For thousands across Middle Georgia, Dr. Patricia Coussens was not just a doctor.
She was a ministry in a white coat.
