She has done it again. Katherine Center, with her gift for expression, witty dialogue, and bringing characters to life, did exactly what I hoped she would do in her newest novel, The Shippers.
This book pulled me straight out of a reading slump. Between errands and everyday life, my nose stayed buried in the pages. It has been a long time since I read a book in essentially one sitting.
Without giving away the ending, The Shippers follows JoJo Burton, a woman determined to solve her intimacy issues while attending her sister’s destination wedding on a cruise ship. Armed with pop psychology and a fixation on her first crush, JoJo finds herself unexpectedly tangled back up with Cooper Watts — her childhood best friend and former heartbreak who suddenly reappears in her life. What follows is a witty, heartfelt story full of fake flirting, slow dancing, jealousy, awkward moments, humor, and emotional honesty as the two begin uncovering truths that could change everything.
Katherine Center has a way of writing characters who feel real — flawed, hopeful, funny, and lovable all at once.
I gave the book 4.75 stars. Why not a full five? Because I loved it so much I simply didn’t want it to end.
