For Ben Agnew, homeschooling through Lochnaw Academy was simply life as he knew it growing up.

“It really wasn’t different than regular school to me,” he said. “I think it will feel different this fall when I’m in college full-time.”

Agnew, who has already been dual enrolled and will enter college as a sophomore, plans to major in education with a focus on early childhood and special education. He said the desire to help children came naturally.

“I’ve always kind of known I wanted to be a teacher,” he said. “Teaching and nursing both run in my family.”

That caring spirit is already evident in his daily life. Agnew works with first and second graders at church and also helps in the nursery. Friends and family describe him as friendly, loving and smart — qualities that fit well with his future career goals.

A member of both First Baptist Church of Cochran and House of Grace, Agnew said his faith plays a major role in how he approaches life.

His advice to younger children is simple but heartfelt.

“Always follow Christ and put your wants aside and focus on others,” he said. “Don’t be selfish.”

Like many children, Agnew once dreamed big in ways only kids can.

“When I was younger, I thought about being president one day,” he said with a laugh. “Or maybe a firefighter because I thought their hats were cool.”

Outside of academics, Agnew enjoys older books, comics, technology and games in his free time.

He has also been active in 4-H since the fifth grade and continues preparing for state competition this year. Over the years, he has earned numerous honors in different competitions, including district project achievements for a cooking competition where he and his brother made pizza together.

As he prepares for the next chapter of life, Agnew carries with him not only academic success, but also a servant’s heart and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
