By Dr. Philip West

I have stood where this little boy is standing. He doesn’t want to show his parents his report card. My grades were never that bad, but there were times when they didn’t meet my mother’s standards.

I remember carrying my report card in my notebook and hoping I could wait at least one more day before showing it to her. Then my aunt would call, wanting to compare my grades with my cousin’s. Soon I would hear, “Phil, did you get your report card today?”

It was time to give an account for my schoolwork. It was the day of reckoning. In much the same way, there is coming another day of reckoning, the day when we stand before Christ to give an account for the life we have lived. Scripture makes this clear.

In 2 Corinthians 5:10, we are told, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” This is not a judgment to determine our salvation, but an evaluation of our works, where rewards (crowns) are given according to our faithfulness.

How are we living in light of that day? May we be found faithful when that day comes.
