When people hear about The Ledger, they sometimes ask a question that honestly makes sense in today’s world:
“Is it a Facebook page?”
“Is it a newsletter?”
“Is it a blog?”
The answer is simple.
No.
The Ledger is a locally owned online newspaper serving Cochran, Bleckley County and the surrounding area.
We publish news, features, sports, columns, community announcements, business spotlights, public interest stories, and original reporting on our website at http://www.thecbledger.com. Our Facebook page is simply one of the ways we share links to stories and connect with readers — much like traditional newspapers once used paper racks and front porches to distribute their work.
The heart of what we do happens on the website itself.
In just a few days, The Ledger will celebrate two months online. Since launching March 18, what started as a community idea supported by local people has quickly grown into something much larger than we imagined.
Thousands of readers now visit the website regularly. Local businesses have invested in advertising. Community members send story ideas, announcements, photographs and nominations for features. Readers check the site daily for updates on city government, schools, sports, community events, business news, local personalities and more.
We are not a gossip page.
We are not a rumor mill.
We are not an anonymous social media account chasing outrage and clicks.
We are a newspaper built for a digital age.
That means some things may look different than they did 20 years ago. Instead of ink and paper, stories are published online. Instead of waiting for a weekly edition, readers can access stories immediately. Instead of only reaching subscribers through the mail, stories can be shared instantly through social media, text messages and email.
But the purpose remains the same:
to inform, document, celebrate and serve the community.
Local journalism still matters.
Communities deserve coverage of school achievements, city council meetings, local sports victories, nonprofit work, faith events, businesses, civic organizations and the everyday people who make small towns special. Those stories deserve a home.
That is what The Ledger hopes to be.
We know we are still growing. We are still learning. Building a newspaper — especially from the ground up — takes time, patience and community support. But we are grateful for every reader, advertiser, contributor and supporter who has helped make these first two months possible.
The Ledger is not replacing social media. It is not competing with your Facebook feed.
It is something deeper than that.
It is a local newspaper built online for the people of this community.
And we are just getting started.
