From Staff Reports

The 23rd annual Bible Reading Marathon concluded Thursday, May 7, at noon as participants on the courthouse square in Cochran joined communities across the nation in observance of the National Day of Prayer.

Observed on the first Thursday of May each year, the National Day of Prayer is a congressionally recognized day that encourages Americans to pray for the nation, its leaders, schools, churches, families, military personnel, first responders and local communities.

The observance traces its roots back to 1952, when Congress established the annual day of prayer and President Harry Truman signed it into law. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan designated the first Thursday in May as its permanent date.

Thursday’s closing gathering marked the conclusion of the marathon and Bleckley County’s participation in the nationwide Day of Prayer observance.
