As a child, it was a treat to get a box of Cracker Jack. I enjoyed the molasses-coated popcorn, but the peanuts were my favorite, usually found at the bottom of the box. Then there was the prize: temporary tattoos, stickers, rings, whistles, and other small surprises.

This sweet-and-salty snack was introduced in 1893 by Frederick and Louis Rueckheim. It became widely popular in the early 1900s and is still associated with baseball and the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

The peanuts and popcorn are good, but what sets them apart is the molasses coating. In Scripture, God describes the life of His people in a similar way.

Colossians 3:12 tells us that, as God’s chosen people, we are to be clothed (coated) with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

A. W. Tozer said, “The Holy Spirit never enters a man and leaves him unchanged.”

All of these characteristics are the result of God’s Spirit dwelling within us.

Lord, help us to yield to Your Spirit in such a way that what is seen in us is not just who we are naturally, but who You are transforming us to be. Shape us into the likeness of your Son. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
