Sometimes the hardest part of supper is making the decision.

That was my mood Saturday evening. I was tired of fast food, didn’t feel like cooking, and honestly didn’t want to make any major adult decisions. A sub sounded good, so I made my way to Frostbite Ice Cream & Subs in downtown Cochran.

From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by cashier Cindy Waterman, one of the owners, and by a spacious, clean dining area that immediately felt inviting. It had the kind of simple, comfortable charm that brought to mind the classic deli scenes from When Harry Met Sally or You’ve Got Mail — relaxed, welcoming, and the sort of place where you can enjoy a meal without being rushed.

The atmosphere was peaceful and calm, with plenty of room to breathe and enjoy your visit. Nothing felt cramped or chaotic, which made the stop even more enjoyable after a long day.

Mounted above the counter was a menu board full of choices and personality. From cold cuts and turkey to Philly cheesesteaks, meatball subs, clubs, and the house-named Cochran Club, there was something for just about every appetite.

Prices felt reasonable, especially in a time when many quick meals cost more than expected.

And right in the middle of it all was a playful sign advertising Pennzoil Motor Oil among the extras — the kind of quirky touch that gives a local place character you just can’t manufacture.

I ordered the six-inch cold cut combo known as The Cochran, served on toasted wheat bread with oil and vinegar. When Cindy pointed out the available toppings, I may have surprised her.

“Surprise me,” I said.

As I was paying, she mentioned that because of Downtown Day, anyone ordering a sub was receiving a complimentary ice cream. That’s a nice way to support a community event and reward customers at the same time.

Since my order was to go, I had the chance to observe the staff in action, including owner Mark Waterman. I was impressed by the precision, efficiency, and friendliness of the crew. Orders moved smoothly, the atmosphere stayed calm, and no one looked flustered even during a busy stretch.

Once home, the food told the rest of the story.

The sub was prepared with care — just the right amount of toppings, fresh ingredients, and nothing sliding out onto my shirt halfway through. That alone deserves recognition.

If I were being picky, I’d mention there were onions on my sandwich, and I’m not a big onion fan. But to be fair, I did tell them to surprise me.

The Pepsi Zero was another pleasant surprise — crisp, strong, and without the weak or flat taste some fountain drinks can have.

And the complimentary cookies and cream ice cream was the real deal: creamy, flavorful, neatly scooped, and still in great shape thanks to the lid they thoughtfully placed on the container.

In short, Frostbite offers more than food. It offers friendliness, attention to detail, and a comfortable downtown stop worth visiting.

Frostbite doesn’t feel like a chain restaurant trying to look local. It feels local because it is.

If you haven’t tried Frostbite Ice Cream & Subs, you may be missing one of Cochran’s sweetest local spots.
