By Dr. Philip West

This picture reminds me of the works of Thomas Kinkade. He became famous for paintings of cozy cottages, churches, and villages with a very distinctive effect: warm, glowing light coming from the windows.

That “light shining from inside buildings – especially churches” is one of his signature visual trademarks, and it is exactly why he was widely called the “Painter of Light.”

That image of light glowing from within this home reminds me of a greater truth: God’s presence is meant to shine from within His people into the darkness.

Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Jesus is teaching that His followers are meant to live in such a way that their lives become visible evidence of God’s presence within them.

The “light” is not about drawing attention to ourselves, but about reflecting God’s character through actions like love, kindness, mercy, and grace.

As God’s light shines through you, I pray that it points others toward God Himself, so that He receives the glory.
