From Staff Reports

Residents in Cochran and surrounding communities are being urged to stay alert after reports of a fraudulent “notice” letter designed to steal personal and financial information.

According to information shared with customers of State Bank of Cochran, several individuals have received what is being referred to as a “Scam Waiver” or “Notice.” The letter instructs recipients to call a phone number and provide sensitive information — a key red flag of fraud.

Local banks, including State Bank of Cochran, Community Bank of Johnson County, First Laurens Bank, and BankSouth, have confirmed that the notice is not legitimate and was not sent by their institutions.

The letter appears official in format and tone, which may make it seem credible at first glance. However, bank officials stress that customers should not call the number listed or share any personal or financial details.

Residents who receive one of these notices are encouraged to:

  • Not call the phone number provided on the letter
  • Never share account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other personal information
  • Bring the letter to a local bank branch so it can be documented

If you’ve already called the number or shared information, contact your local bank immediately for assistance.

Bank officials say they are taking the situation seriously and are working to ensure customers remain informed and protected.

As scams continue to evolve, residents are reminded to be cautious of unsolicited communications — especially those that create urgency or request sensitive information.
