The City of Cochran is undergoing a period of transition within its leadership, following the recent resignations of two key officials.
City Manager Richard Newbern announced his resignation on Feb. 13 after more than 11 years of service. According to a public notice from the city, his resignation became effective March 13, 2026.
In the same notice, city officials stated that plans were underway to secure an interim city manager and ensure continuity of daily operations during the transition.
On Feb. 24, the city began accepting applications for an Interim City Manager, describing the role as part of a “transitional period.” The position includes responsibilities such as budget preparation, staff leadership, and grant management.
Applications for the interim role were directed to City Clerk Candace Summerall.
Less than two weeks later, on March 6, the city publicly introduced Summerall in a Facebook post, highlighting her service, positive attitude, and commitment to the Cochran community.
However, Summerall later submitted her resignation, which was confirmed by Cochran Mayor Carla Coley in a phone call with The Ledger. Her final day with the city was at the end of March.
More recently, the City of Cochran has advertised the City Clerk position, seeking applicants for the full-time administrative role responsible for records management, council support, and oversight of key administrative functions.
The posting appeared approximately six days ago and is expected to remain open for a standard application period.
City officials have also indicated that the search for a permanent city manager is underway, with an outside agency assisting in vetting candidates. An announcement regarding a potential interim city manager could be made soon.
At this time, no additional details have been released regarding the circumstances surrounding the resignations.
