From Staff Reports

Residents within the City of Cochran are being reminded that storing abandoned or inoperable vehicles on residential property is prohibited under local code enforcement regulations.

According to city guidelines, a vehicle may be considered abandoned if it is left on public property for more than five days or on private property for more than 30 days. Vehicles that are inoperable—such as those missing parts, lacking a valid tag, or deemed not roadworthy—also fall under this classification.

City officials emphasize that no junk or abandoned vehicles are allowed within city limits. Property owners found in violation will receive a 20-day notice to remove the vehicle. Failure to comply may result in further action, including citations or summons, as well as the vehicle being towed and impounded.

Once a vehicle has been impounded, owners have 30 days to claim it. All towing and storage fees must be paid before release. Vehicles that remain unclaimed after 30 days may be sold at auction.

Residents with questions or those needing assistance are encouraged to contact Code Enforcement Officer Danny Smith at 478-934-6346.

City leaders say the effort is part of an ongoing commitment to keeping Cochran “clean, safe and beautiful.”
